The Shadow Behind the Light

One Thursday evening, while stuck in traffic, my thoughts drifted — as they often do — to the planets. Thursdays are ruled by — Brihaspati, the Guru of the Devas. The wise teacher. The holder of dharma. The one who gives light to the path of righteousness.

But even the Guru has stories the stars remember…

And in that still moment, I recalled one such tale — the story of Jupiter, Soma, Tara, and the birth of Budha (Mercury).

Soma, the Moon God, once fell ill and sought refuge at the house of Brihaspati, the divine teacher. But the universe is rarely still. In the absence of the Guru, called away by fate Soma, under the spell of old karmas, abducted Tara, Brihaspati’s wife, on the fourteenth dark night of the lunar cycle and crossed a line that would change everything — he violated Tara.

This led to a massive divine conflict, known as the Tarakamaya War with gods and sages divided. It only ended when Lord Brahma stepped in and asked Soma to return Tara. But the winds of destiny had already shifted. Tara was now carrying a child. And on the darkest night — Amavasya, she gave birth to Budha.

The gods gathered. A question hovered in the sky like a cloud that wouldn’t move:

Whose child was this?

Tara remained silent. Soma claimed him. Brihaspati turned away.

And Budha — the radiant, sharp-eyed child — grew with this question burning in his heart. Eventually, Lord Shiva, the great ascetic and cosmic witness, spoke. He reminded Brihaspati of his own past-life karmic debts, his sins against a woman, and gently whispered a deeper truth:

Even wisdom must bow before karma.”

Only then did Tara speak.Yes, she said, Budha was Soma’s son.And Brihaspati — wise, wounded, and humbled — accepted the child.

Now you might wonder — why does this story matter?

This story holds a hidden sutra. This one points to the importance of the 12th house from Jupiter in your birth chart.

This house often shows where loss, separation, or past-life karma might show up again. And in some special combinations, it even shows where emotional pain or confusion in relationships may return.

For example:

If the Upapada Lagna is present in the 12th house from Jupiter

In a Male native’s chart Venus or the 7th Lord is placed 12th from Jupiter In a Female native’s chart if Mars or the 7th Lord is placed 12th from Jupiter

And if Moon or 2nd Lord relates to 12th house from Jupiter, it will be a confirmation.

This effect becomes even stronger when Jupiter is in Aries — a sign ruled by Mars.

How to Balance This Karma?

The remedy lies in worshiping Lord Shiva. When karma feels heavy, Shiva teaches us to let go.

On Thursdays or Amavasya, one must:

  • Offer water (jala) to a Shiva Lingam

  • Chant “Namah Shivaya” (Panchakshari Mantra) with sincerity

  • Donate food or help someone in need.

These simple acts can soften karmic patterns and bring clarity, peace, and emotional healing.

We often think of Jupiter as the bringer of good fortune. But more than that, he is the guide, the one who helps us rise when we fall.

He teaches us that not all knowledge comes from books. Some comes from pain. Some from silence. And some from stories whispered through destiny and karma.

Jupiter takes twelve years to complete its orbit, marking the longer rhythm of life, beyond daily gains. He reminds us to think in cycles, not moments. In souls, not egos.

So, as I sat still that evening, among hundreds of unmoving cars, it felt as though time paused so that I could remember this story.

And in that remembering, I was reminded:

Even in confusion, there is wisdom. Even in loss, there is a lesson. And even in darkness, Budha is born — a child of intellect, born from conflict, rising from silence.

That’s the power of Jyotish.

It doesn’t just tell you what might happen. It reveals the karma that called you back to complete it, what even the wise once left undone..

And that sometimes, even the Guru must learn. Watch the full in depth video below https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=spQYaNExTqs&t=1s
